International Mischief - The Musicians

The Rhythm Section - John Rae, Mario Lima Caribe, Brian Kellock

Rhythm Tracks 1-7 and 9-12 were recorded between 2007 and 2015 with these guys plus myself and Dave Grey at Sound Cafe. The ethos was to record each song from beginning to end and we recorded 3 passes at most. We aimed to achieve the right attitude and groove and we played alongside a basic guide track of the arrangements. Charts were used for the Geography and Harmony and the trio were asked to interpret the songs subject/meaning and not just the chord changes.

For their individual musicianship, their combined Listening, Interplay, Empathy and best efforts to interpret and serve each song I am eternally grateful. They are the pallette all the recordings begin with.

The Guest Musicians, like the Rhythm section, are all also uniquely musical and a joy to work with. Each were keen to serve the song 1st and find the right attitude for performance orientated recordings, whilst capturing their own distinctive musical identities.

John is one of the most musical of all the drummists I know and the rhythmic glue across all the songs. as a cool example of interpretation, for 'Mustangs' I asked him to consider Horses in a stable as well as slip between 3/4, 6/8 and 4/4.

Mario is likewise a focused and considerate player with a unique virtuosic style and focused attitude in the studio and anytime he plays. For 'Under the gun" i asked him to be a Tumbleweed in the desert as well as follow the punctuated chart.

Brian also has a unique musical and virtuosic voice which he can mould into adjectives and attitudes with minimal direction and maximum empathy to the songs subject. His solo's and restrained comping to allow for lyrical space are always just right!.

rt

Rick Taylor - Rick was a rock of support throughout the recordings, adding vocals, entire Trombone sections and enthusiasm for the lyrical and musical material. He was based in Skye and created a friendly loving explosion of music wherever he blew. Rick passed early summer 2019. A lovely man.

.

Patrick Bleakley - 'Paddy' plays Mario's Bass on 2 songs 'Showbiz Creature' and Set them Right' which were recorded at The Forge in 2015 while he was over from NZ playing with 'The Troubles' at the Edinburgh Festival and Mario was in NZ on tour!!.

Phil Bancroft - Phil has always gone to great lengths and pains to serve both the narrative and emotional centre of any of the musical project we have worked on for many years. We spend long hours discussing the music we record and seem to capture the magic quickly. Hear Phil's musical narrative on " The Salmon's Tail" from Bandcamp.

Tommy Smith - Tommy also sports a unique and virtuosic voice and like Phil has always managed to serve the music and lyric, while still contributing something of himself to the recordings. We recorded his parts in Ca Va in 2018.

Chris Marra - Chris is another solid muso with multiple instrumental chops, which i handcuffed for his Pedal Steel contribution to 'Under the Gun'. He sings great as well and his vocal harmonies on 'Campanero', were the last session of the album.
