"Shadows in the dark" c.2008 K.Murray
"Well its almost academic" said the juggler to the fool.
"If you fail to pay the piper, rats return, well thats the rule
take your laws of economics add some math and common sense,
all our minstrels end up beggars, well its almost present tense.
In this hall of kings and other vermin, bullet traders dine.
While whores and comic singers watch their songsmiths serving wine
Do you see that dark haired beauty dancing naked on the bar,
they say she writes a powerful song her voice bright as the very star that
lights us yet she's a shadow in the dark."
"I think our gig is safe" said the fool "the people pay for laughs
and my moneys in munitions, i watch rising profit graphs every day."
then he heard the juggler say
"Your growing shadows in the dark,
        growing shadows in the dark,
so let me shed some light here
let me shed some light here".
"If we only pay for bullets, if we only pay for crack,
if we only pay for juggling skills and musics free to hack,
then the only money lefts in guns and drugs and circus tricks
all those kids that study music, waste their time learning new licks.
You cannot download talent, cannot download soul or brains
and you cant download rat catchers when the rats pour from your drains
in rat world no one earns a wage, no family safe or fed
all that we once valued dearly will be whispered or left unsaid
We'll hide like shadows in the dark"
"So do not think your gig is safe." said the juggler, "Thats not cool
if you let these longtails flourish you'll grow a bigger fool
every day and soon you'll have to stay a
shadow in the dark like a
        shadow in the dark
so let us turn some lights on
let us turn some lights on
We'd better turn this current set of values on its head
if we don't then all our wages, well they'll soon be paid in lead
and we'd better free our songbirds and we'd better feed them soon
and free them from this twilight world to hear them praise the moon
well you could learn some satire and i'll learn to throw knives
and maybe we'll reduce the rats that seem to run our lives
and daylight will come sooner when the songbird and the lark
are free and fit for purpose chasing night and all its shadows in the dark
So lets us make our future safe" said the juggler " lets get cruel
and me and you go hunting where the vermin seem to rule everywhere."
and the fool said " that sounds fair, lets hunt some
        shadows in the dark"
        Together they turned lights on
        someone turned their lights on
        "honey leave a light on
i'll chase your shadows in the dark
honey leave a light on" |

his song is dedicated to Ando, Mick, Mary and all music students current and future.
I recorded the form at the Forge on guitar with a click and myself, Brian and Mario recorded guitar, piano and double bass as a rhythm section in Sound Cafe, with Dave behind the desk. Again i took the result and emailed it to John in NZ who recorded his part and emailed it back. It came together really quickly and i did the final vocal after a ceilidh gig around 2 in the am. |
