Must have been a Cowboy

"Must have been a Cowboy" c.2007 K.Murray

I must have been a cowboy, must have crossed the western ranges
i know i like the big wide sky and to watch the seasons changes
i love the wind upon my face, the sun across my back
i like sleepin in the open and my coffee thick and black

i must have been a soldier, must have fought across the ages
i know the signs of fear in men and i know to swerve their rages
i have no trust for presidents and no faith in their speeches
i do not trust their history and i question all they teach us

somehow i'm connected to sky and all its stars
through the matter in the universe, through time through family scars
when i look across the night sky i can see across the years
i can sense the touch of those that came before and fought to get me here

i must have been a bird of peace must have flown across all nations
i never found no place to call home, never found no safe foundations
we worry for our childrens kids, well we worry for good reasons cause democracy's a comfort word and slavery's still in season

i must have been a salmon wild, i must have crossed the seas and oceans

i know the freedom of their depths, i know the struggle of their motions

i move through troubled waters and i leap in faith each day

i do not let the flow of life defeat or halt my way.

somehow i'm connected to the sky and all its stars
through the matter in the universe, through time through family scars
when i look out on the night sky, i can see across the years
can sense the touch of those that came before and fought to get me here

we are all connected to the sky and all its stars
through all the matter in the universe, through time and family scars
when you look out on the night sky, you can see across the years
you can sense the touch of those that came before and fought to get you here

i must have been a speck of cosmic dust adrift in space
i know my soul has travelled far to wear this human face
i know my family fell and rose to challenges and chance
i know that time dictates when and if at all we dance

How come everybody that claims to have some memory of re-incarnation, was a princess or king, or such !!. Cowboy began as a rebuke to that idea and grew into a homage to family and the sky at night.

Sandy and i recorded the guitar and mandolin together, via the Rhode NT 1 and then between gigs and teaching commitments etc i added another acoustic guitar and took this to Sound Cafe, as a guide track for Brian And Mario. They recorded together and the 1st take is what features on the CD. Back in the Forge, i added the vocal and my cousin Frank on Harmonica and lastly, the Strat via the mesa boogie and mic and then re-amped it through my pod. I emailed the track to John in NZ and he recorded the drums at his home studio and emailed them back.
